My mum helped to make The Beatles
A Standish man claims his mum could be responsible for The Beatles famous mop-top hair cuts!
Harry Prytherch, says his mum Lily, used to work at the Blackers Store in Liverpool where George Harrison was an electrician back in the early 60s.
Lily used to tell George to get his hair cut when he went for his meals in the canteen where she worked.
Harry, said: "George used to say that he wouldn’t get his hair cut because he was in a band but my mum used to say 'my son’s in a band and he has short hair’ George even told me on one occasion at Blair Hall in Liverpool to tell my mum to stop going on about it. About sixmonths after that The Beatles had their hair cut, I sometimes wonder if my mum was responsible."
Harry was the drummer with the Merseybeat group the Remo Four who shared the stage with The Beatles on 42 occasions. Harry remembers: "I got on well with all The Beatles, except John Lennon who was quite sarcastic. When I first saw them I thought they were a load of rubbish but looking back they had a great manager, great songs anti brilliant lyrics."
The Remo Four are Merseybeat legends —their name appears in several books about the early 60s.
George Harrison only worked at the store for sixmonths, while Lily clocked up over 20 years.
Harry, who occasionally still plays the drums on special occasions, is a member of the Merseycats, an organisation for bands and singers from the scene in the 1960s, who often organise special charity shows.
The Remo Four are mentioned in Edwina Gurrie’s latest book, ‘She’s Leaving Home,’ and she recently sent Harry a signed copy.
