Geoff
Rhind is a name synonymous with Beatle historians. It was Geoff’s
unique photograph that captured a 16-year-old John Lennon on the
day John met Paul McCartney.
Forty years and Geoff is still taking photographs although he
spends most of his days painting and his nights making music.
If you ever get a chance on a Wednesday night, go up to The Blue
Light pub in the Dublin mountains and witness Geoff and friends
playing some traditional music at first hand. If you can’t
make it there’s always the album ‘Hail Caesar’.
Featuring 12-tracks mostly written by lead vocalist Joe Dunne
‘Hail Caesar’ has a mellow traditional sound to it.
Joe’s voice is not unlike Christy Dignam and on tracks like
‘Never Never Die’ and ‘Mother Earth And The
Rainbow’ you’d think you were listening to an Aslan
album.
Lyrically, there’s mention of the troubles in Northern Ireland.
‘So many good people have died’ (Good People) and
‘Their crushing hearts those people with guns’ (Lie’s
Down) but in general the album covers various topics.
There’s a wide range of instruments used as you’d
expect from Accordion, Fiddle and Banjo to Geoff’s harmonica
most evident on ‘8th June’ and on the title track.
After a few listens I began to like this album and I think you
won’t be disappointed either. How could you go wrong? Purchasing
it for Geoff’s artwork on the front and back cover alone
is value for money.
