The road of life is rarely smooth, but in Rusty Anderson’s
case it’s always been a straight line to his guitar.
You’ve been listening to Rusty Anderson for years. And
Undressing Underwater - his upcoming solo release - at last shines
the spotlight on the guitarist/singer/songwriter career of a consummate
musician, who continues to break ground while working with some
of the best of his peers.
Anderson, who is feted for his guitar work on Paul McCartney's
Driving Rain and lead guitarist for the former Beatles' touring
band, has a musical background that spins through Oscar-nominated
and Grammy-winning work.
If you haven't heard him playing on the most recent releases
by The Wallflowers, Perry Farrell’s solo album, Elton John
or Sinead O'Connor, you've probably swayed to works such as Santana's
The Game of Love, or bopped to the surf riff he wrote and played
on Livin' La Vida Loca. But it was time for his own album - and
Undressing Underwater is the powerful result.
“I’ve been writing songs for a long time,”
said Anderson. “As they stack up, I figured they should
be recorded and put out there. If I’m ever going to do a
solo record, I might as well do one now.” The Southern California
native began playing guitar at age eight and hasn't looked back.
After being the driving force behind some of Los Angeles' most
popular bands, he met up with leading producer David Kahne and
began a studio career that soon had him at the forefront of rock's
most in-demand session players.
And since the road always calls, he was also a member of Stanley
Clarke and Stewart Copeland's Animal Logic and the popular LA
band Ednaswap. Close to one hundred studio albums and a three
McCartney tours later, Undressing Underwater is the seminal work
of a singer/songwriter who at last sings his own tunes.
Produced by Kahne, Parthenon Huxley and Mudrock, along with
Rusty himself, Undressing Underwater address a very personal body
of work, capturing Rusty’s live energy and putting it into
some of his strongest studio work yet. Working with the best of
his peers isn’t just lip service. In the case of Hurt Myself,
it’s the culmination of a childhood dream of playing with
the Beatles, only in this case it’s Paul McCartney playing
on Rusty’s own album.
“Aside from Paul and the entire band, along with David
Kahne, guesting on Hurt Myself, Paul Bushnell, a great friend
and brilliant musician who has done a zillion records with me,
played bass on a few tracks,” said Anderson. “Parthenon
Huxley, a talented singer/songwriter/producer, is someone I’ve
worked with on and off for years.
Mudrock, who also produced a song, moved in across the street.
We got to talking and thought it would be fun to do some rocking.
Certain musicians like Scott Coogan, who played with me in Ednaswap,
always come through with the goods.”
Thank goodness that the road leads to Undressing Underwater.
The straight line from Rusty Anderson to his guitar has never
been better.
