A major collection of art in aid of Am nesty International by more than 100 Irish artists was launched on 6th May by Yoko Ono in Dublin .
The artists responded to a request from University College Dublin's professor Ciaran Benson to donate a painting to the collection, 'In The Time Of Shaking.'
Just after 11.00 am on Thursday 6th May, It was time for Yoko to meet the press at the Irish Museum of Modem Art. Yoko ' s PA had said to the assembled press corps that she was about to be made available for a photo shot for about 40 minutes. We were all told that this would be a "You Can Look But Don't touch" session.
At about 11.20 wearing black, she emerged smiling and was given a tour of the exhibition by Professor Ciaran Benson. She was pursued hotly around the exhibition by the Irish media including broadcasters BBC, RTE UTV and TV3. "John was my soulmate, a very important person in my life," she said, stopping momentarily in the middle of the rough media scramble she went on to say "We did the bed-in. The rest is history. We tried our best and to day I feel as though he is here with us because this is the kind of thing that he would have loved to see happen, that I am in Dublin for the first time, "she said, smiling. "He believed that he was Irish. And so I feel as though I know you. I'm honoured that I was invited here."
Following the press launch by Yoko, the exhibition was opened later that day by Yoko and U2 guitarist Dave "The Edge", Evans, accompanied by his artist friend Guggi, who has an oil work called 'Vessels' in the exhibition.
Professor Benson said: "This is a once-in-a-generation thing. Over a million of euros of work is on display." The works will be exhibited in the East Wing of the Irish Museum of Modern Art from Friday 7th May until Sunday 23rd May. Admission is free, and the Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00 am-5.30 pm and on Sundays, 12.00-5.30 pm. Visit www.artforanmesty.org/shaking for details.
